The Sea of Clouds natural phenomenon in the Canary Islands is a breathtaking experience, a landscape that continues to excite tenor saxophonist and composer Tori Freestone, and a special impulse for El Mar de Nubes for his third trio album with bassist Dave Mannington and drummer Tim Giles.
Beginning with “In Chop House” in 2014, then “El Barranco” in 2016, the almost unvoiced Freestone trio has established itself as a kaleidoscopic improvisational unit. Ideas have their origin in the cult source of the name, and between the three actors there is a noticeable balance and discoveries.
The lyrical basis of the desired title of the Tory song is heard - “Stand Alone, Over the Sea of Clouds ...” - it penetrates the melodic lines between billowing bass and shock waves; and the double personality “Hide Jekyll” is described by overlapping rhythms and tempos. Other names include “Los Indianos” (Carnival in La Palma), reminiscent of past years as a violinist with Cuban bands, whose viability is described by saxophonists as “an atmosphere that destroys the groove of the calypso”; thoughts about the past and the future for the New Year are considered in the metric modules of “La nochevieja”. Hasta Vista, impetuous Dave Manington, gives it ease, and El Camino creates freedom for creative saxophone flows.
“This project means so much to me,” Tori says, “and I think that we have reached a higher level with this album, we are playing very openly and always ready for surprises.” This ability to look for new ways gives El Mar de Nubes ingrained beauty, color and interest.
