Schools are such special places. By creating an environment in which excellent teachers meet and develop a sense of cohort, these respected institutions can, with good development, generate motivation and appetite for the future. The University of Music and Theater in Leipzig is an example. Here, Max Stadtfeld studied with professors such as Heinrich Koeberling and Michael Wally. In early 2019, Wolney chose a 25-year-old drummer for his BAU.HAUS.KLANG quintet with Emil Parisien, directors John and Wolfgang Heysig. This experience is not only a continuation of the teacher-student relationship, because Leipzig also offers other opportunities: several clubs and other places where Max Stadtfeld could really liberate his game and become part of the community.
For young jazz musicians it is important to apply what they have learned. They have to go out and find their own stories, because jazz itself lives from the main characters. Only then can it become authentic and reflect the world around it. This is necessary to start a chain reaction. “Music compresses impressions,” explains Max Stadtfeld. When he speaks, his will to live is palpable; and more if he plays. “I love rhythm,” he says. And he breathes his impulse and his rhythmic energy into his group so that soloists can get along. He takes only the space that he considers necessary. It's about becoming autonomous right now, doing the right thing. Sometimes this means that you can take a step back and restrict yourself to small details, nuances and interweaving. You do not need to worry too much, because you are losing wood for the trees. True pleasure begins when you are careful and ideally take the whole group with you.
