This CD is aimed at all those who like classical music and jazz. But people not so keen on classical music will still find the musical extracts on this CD interesting, because they demonstrate differences which are crucial for determining the fidelity for every type of music. The CD is equally suitable for use with speakers and headphones.

If you wish to use this CD for buying hifi equipment, it is a good idea first to listen to it at home in your own time.

How the CD is structured

The CD is divided into two sections: In the first section you will find a range of tests from general, basic criteria through to tests for frequency response. The test is designed in such a way that with only a few examples you can recognise the most important points quickly and easily, whether you wish to buy a complete set of new equipment or an individual appliance, or you want to judge the quality of your own equipment or compare it with others, or if you want to test the sound quality of your multimedia computer - for all these things you need Section I of our CD. You do not need any other equipment, such as measuring devices, only your ears. If you are happy with all the test results then you will know that your equipment is set up and wired up correctly and that the sound quality is up to standard. You can then use the many musical excerpts on this CD to compare different speakers, headphones, amplifiers, CD players, or complete hifi kits and pick out the best. For professional musicians this is the most reliable way of making a proper judgment. Of course your personal taste is important here.

To answer the question "audiophile or not?" you need the second section of the CD. Here is the acid test not only for your equipment but also for your ears. Which nuances can be heard with the most up-to-date technology? Here there is a series of interesting comparisons -from a variety of microphone positions to different lengths of lead to different AID (analog/digital) convertors. And in this section you will find testing methods and ideas which were not necessary for the basic testing of the first part. In the second part you should be able to adjust your set to high volume, not to deafen yourself, but because otherwise you would be unable to hear the extremely quiet signals.
